Hanuman Chalisa with Meaning
श्री गुरु चरन सरोज रज, निज मनु मुकुर
सुधारि| वरनउ रघुबर बिमल जसु , जो दायक फल चारी ||
First of all I meditate upon the soil of my Guru’s (spritual
teacher’s) feet (which is like lotus) , the soil is powerful enough to clear my
mind of all the hallucination of the material world and to tread me to the path
to LORD RAM (The Almighty) who bestows us the results of this life and lives
beyond this life.
(Here this is to be kept in mind that Shri Tulsidas who is
the original composer of ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ considered ‘HANUMAN’ as his guru to
reach SHRI RAM (his choosen form of GOD).
बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके सुमिरौं पवन-कुमार ।बल
बुद्धि बिद्या देहु मोहिं हरहु क्लेश बिकार ॥
O Pavan-Kumar, Please consider me as your ignorant child and
forgive me sins of my lives till date and provide me valor, wisdom and
knowledge and make me sinless and pure by giving your divine blessing.(As your
blessing can help me to realise who am I)
||चौपाई||
जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुण सागर |जय
कपिस तिहु लोक उजागर ||
I meditate upon that HANUMAN who is the perfectionist, who
not only has the highest level of knowledge but also the quality to implement
it in the appropriate way,
I meditate upon that HANUMAN whose Guru is Surya (Kapi) and
who removes darkness of ignorance by HIS knowledge in the Trilok (Swarg Lok,
Bhoo Lok and Paatal Lok).
(I take inspiration from YOU to do my task in hand in a
perfect way (knowledge + implementation.)
राम दूत अतुलित बल धामा |अंजनीपुत्र पवन
सूत नामा ||
I meditate upon that HANUMAN who is the messenger of Ram and
insurmountable amount of strength,
I meditate upon that HANUMAN whose names are Anjani-Putra
and Pawan Sut (son of Vayu which denotes speed) .
(I pledge to remain a believer like YOU and respect my
elders.)
महावीर विक्रम बजरंगी |कुमति निवास
सुमति के संगी ||
I meditate upon that HANUMAN who is brave, laborious
(because of mental strength) and his body is as strong as Vajra,
I meditate upon that HANUMAN whose thought only dispels evil
feelings and changes it to noble ones.
(I promise to take care of my body and mind and thus control
the senses whenever my mind wavers, I will remind YOU and YOUR deeds which can
be accomplished only by strong mind and body and of course positive thought
process).
कंचन वरन विराज सुवेसा |कानन कुंडल
कुंचित केसा ||
I mediate upon that HANUMAN whose complexion has changed to
gold (fire) due to excitement and anger as HE has to do the Ram-Kaaj and HIS
simple dress even looks pretty,
I meditate upon that HANUMAN who wears a kundal (ear-rings)
and has long and curly hair.
हाथ वज्र औ ध्वजा विराजे |काधे
मूज जनेऊ साजे ||
I meditate upon that HANUMAN who holds Gada (Vajra) in one
hand and flag inscribed ‘Jai Shri Ram’ on another which denotes explicit
message to Ravan and his pupil that if he does not listen to, war is in near
future ,
I meditate upon that HANUMAN who wears Upnayan (sacred
thread) which denotes Brahmacharya or celibacy.
(Here Lord HANUMAN dresses for the Operation Lanka as a spy,
I pledge to use my energy and anger in a positive way so that my opposition
does not undermine me and also tread to the path of celibate life.)
शंकर सुवन केसरीनंदन |तेज प्रताप महा
जग वन्दन ||
YOU are the Almighty (Lord Shiva) but YOU took birth as a
human being , taught by the SUN (which denotes light of knowledge) and known as
the son of Kesari in this world,
YOUR Tej (brilliance) born out of knowledge leads to success
not only in the material world but in the ever permanent spiritual world.
(I pledge to get
mastery over not only the material knowledge but the spiritual knowledge also)
विद्यावान गुनी आती चतुर |राम
काज करिबे को आतुर ||
YOU are knowledgeable, virtuous and clever in implementation
of every job assigned to YOU,
After all YOU are keen to do and cherish doing RAM-kaaj.
(This inspires us how
to get successful in any area when we are keen to do a job and at the same time
possess knowledge regarding it.)
प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया |राम
लखन सीता मान बसिया ||
Such is YOUR love to SHRI RAM, YOU are always eager
listening to SHRI RAM’s story,
And YOU dwell in the hearts of SHRI RAM,LAKSHMAN and SEETA.
(When we love GOD
from the core of our heart, HE is forced to love us in return.)
सूक्ष्म रूप धरी सियाही दिखावा |विकट
रूप धरी लंक जरावा ||
As a spy YOU entered Lanka in the tiniest form and met Seeta
to console her,
Then YOU took huge form and burnt Lanka to show the trailer
to Ravana and his pupils.
YOU took gigantic form to kill enemies (asur),
And thus completed the part of the RAM-kaaj on behalf of
SHRI RAM.
लाये संजीवन लखन जियाये | श्रीरघुवीर
हरषि उर लाये ||
YOU brought ‘Sanjeevani herb’ to revive Lakshman,
which diminished sorrow of SHRI RAM and HE was filled with
joy.
रघुपति कीन्ही बहुत बड़ाई |तुम
मम प्रिय भरत हि सम भाई ||
Then SHRI RAM appreciated YOUR excellence,
and said ,”YOU are as dear and near to me as my dear brother
Bharat.”
सहस बदन तुम्हरो जस गावे |अस
कहि श्रीपति कंठ लगावे ||
“Let the thousand
headed Sheshnag with his thousand tongues sing YOUR glory.”
After saying this SHRI RAM embraced YOU.
सनकादिक ब्रह्मदि मुनीसा |नारद
सरद सहित अहिसा ||
Sanak Munis and other sages, Lord Brahma,
Narad Muni, Goddess Saraswati along with Sheshnag .
जम कुबेर दिगपाल जहा ते |कवि को विद कही
सके कहा ते ||
And Yam (God of Death),Kuber (God of Wealth) and Digpals
(Divine Guardians of all directions) failed to describe your glory.(Only SHRI
RAM can as HE knows YOU fully.)
How can a simple poet like me (Tulsidas) can describe YOU?
तुम उपकार सुग्रीवहि कीन्हा |राम
मिलाय राजपद दीन्हा ||
YOU helped Sugriva,
by introducing with SHRI RAM and he got the kingdom of Kishikandha.
तुम्हरो मंत्र विभीषण माना|लंकेश्वर
भये सब जग जाना ||
Vibhishana heeded YOUR advice,
and he became Lankeshwar (King of Lanka),this is known to
the whole world.
जुग सहस्त्र जोजन पर भानू |लीन्यो
ताहि मधुर फल जानू ||
During childhood YOU flied high up to the sky away to
sixteen thousand miles,
thinking Sun to be a sweet fruit (perhaps mango).
प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माहि |जलधि
लाघी गए अचरज नाही ||
YOU carried SHRI RAM’s ring in YOUR mouth,
while crossing the ocean, should be no wonder at
all.(comparing your above childhood activity)
दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते |सुगम अनुग्रह
तुम्हरे तेते ||
All the difficult (even impossible) tasks of this and
another world,
becomes easy by YOUR remembrance (grace/inspiration).
राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे | होत न आज्ञा
बिनु पैसारे ||
YOU are the DIVINE gatekeeper of the SHRI RAM’s DIVINE
kingdom,
Nobody is allowed to go without YOUR permission.
सब सुख लहै तुम्हारी सरना |तुम
रक्षक काहू को डरना ||
One who surrenders to YOU gets all sorts of happiness,
and become fearless as YOU pledge to protect him.
आपन तेज सम्हारो आपे |तीनो लोक हाक ते
कापे ||
YOU can only withstand YOUR brilliance,
if uncontrolled can cause the Trilok tremble.
भूत पिसाच निकट नहीं आवे |महावीर
जब नाम सुनावे ||
Even Bhoot (past deeds) of mine do not disturb me as Pisach
(bad results),
when I bravely face the circumstances by taking YOUR name O
Mahavir.
नासे रोग हरे सब पीरा |जपत निरंतर
हनुमत बल बीरा ||
YOU destroy diseases and pains,
when one remembers YOU THE BRAVE to get salvation.
संकट ते हनुमान छुरावे | मन क्रम वचन
ध्यान जो लावे ||
YOU ward off the difficulties in this life and thereafter,
when somebody remembers YOU by his thought, deeds and words.
सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा |तिन के काज सकल
तुम साजा ||
SHRI RAM is the King of the Yogis,
and YOU fulfill each of his work with complete joy.
और मनोरथ जो कोई लावे | सोई अमित जीवन
फल पावे ||
Whosoever comes to YOU with any motive,
YOU provide him the permanent fruit of life.
(self-realisation)
चारो युग परताप तुम्हारा |है
परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा ||
YOU are prayed in all the four yugas (be it Satya,Dwapar,
Treta and Kali),
hence making YOUR devotees shine in this and that World.
साधु संत के तुम रखवारे |असुर निकंदन राम
दुलारे ||
YOU are the protector of satogun (knowledge) ,
and destroyer of tamogun (ignorance) in me, hence making me
dearer to SHRI RAM.
अष्टसिद्धि नवनिधि के दाता |अस
वर दींन जानकी माता ||
YOU can give eight siddhis (supernatural powers) and nine
nidhis (devotions) to any person,
as per the boon given by Goddess Sita to YOU.
राम रसायन तुम्हरे पासा |सदा रहो रघुपति
के दासा ||
YOUR strength comes from devotion to SHRI RAM,
and remain the devotee of SHRI RAM for ever.
तुम्हरे भजन राम को भावे |जन्म
जन्म के दुःख बिसरावे ||
By YOUR devotion one finds SHRI RAM,
which would remove the sorrows of this birth including
previous births.
अंत काल रघुबरपुर जाई |जहा जन्म हरि
भक्त कहाई ||
At the end one finds himself the abode of Shri Ram
(Raghuvarpur/Vaikunth),
or in his rebirth he is a born Almighty devotee.
और देवता चित्त न धरई |हनुमत सेइ सर्व
सुख करई ||
One need not please any demi-god by practicising yajna,
Praying to Hanuman itself provides delight no bounds.
संकट कटे मिटे सब पीरा |जो सुमिरे हनुमत
बलबीरा ||
All affliction ceases and all pains disappears,
when one remembers the Brave Hanuman.
जय जय जय हनुमान गुसाई |कृपा करहु गुरु
देव की नाई ||
I mediate upon YOU again and again O Hanuman who has
mastered his senses,
Please bless me as YOU are my guru.
जो शत बार पाठ कर कोई | छूटहि बंदी महा
सुख होई ||
Whoever recites this 100 times (with devotion),
get free from the material bondage and experience the divine
bliss.
जो यह पढ़े हनुमान चालीसा |होय
सिद्धि साखी गौरीसा||
Whoever read this Hanuman Chalisa,
will get positive results, my trusted witness is none other
than Gauripati Lord Shiva.
तुलसीदास सदा हरि चेरा |कीजै नाथ ह्रदय
मह डेरा ||
Tulsidas who is the disciple to Hari (HANUMAN here),
requests the Lord to dwell in his heart.
||दोहा||
पवनतनय संकट हरन , मंगल मूर्ति रूप
|राम लखन सीता सहित,ह्रदय बसहु सुर भूप ||
He who is the son of Vayu, remover of afflictions, in his
auspicious form,
O my King of Lords!I request you to reside in my heart along
with SHRI RAM,LAKSHMANA and SEETA
